Says He ‘Respects and Loves’ PM Modi, Repeats Ceasefire Claim India Denies

New Delhi, October 29: Former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that the United States and India are close to finalising a long-pending trade agreement, adding that it is “only a matter of time.” Speaking in South Korea, during the final leg of his Asia tour, Trump expressed strong appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he has “great respect and love” for him.

“I’m doing a trade deal with India. We have a great relationship, and I have deep respect for Prime Minister Modi,” Trump said.

Negotiations for the trade pact — involving two of the world’s largest economies — have been ongoing for months, facing repeated delays over differences on Russia’s war in Ukraine, India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil, and tariff disputes between the two nations.

Breakthrough Reported in Stalled Talks

According to recent reports, significant progress has been made on two of the three main issues that stalled the agreement.

The United States had earlier imposed a 50% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, including a 25% penalty linked to India’s import of Russian crude. However, Washington is now believed to have agreed to cut tariffs to 16%, following India’s decision to limit its Russian oil imports.

The breakthrough reportedly came after a phone conversation between Trump and Prime Minister Modi, though neither side officially confirmed the trade-offs related to tariffs and oil imports.

The evolving deal could include India allowing greater access for American non-genetically modified (non-GM) corn and soymeal, and establishing a mechanism to periodically review tariffs and market access between the two countries.

Disputes Over Agricultural Market Access

One of the biggest sticking points has been India’s reluctance to open its dairy and agricultural sectors — both of which are politically sensitive and directly affect millions of Indian farmers.

The United States has long sought access to these markets, but successive Indian governments have resisted to protect domestic producers and rural voter bases.

Trump’s Ceasefire Claim Resurfaces

During his remarks, Trump once again claimed credit for mediating a May 10 ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a claim that New Delhi has consistently denied, maintaining that Islamabad had requested the pause in hostilities.

Trump said he helped prevent a “nuclear war” by refusing to sign trade agreements while tensions between India and Pakistan were escalating.

“These are two nuclear nations… they were really going at it. I called Prime Minister Modi and said, ‘We can’t make a trade deal when you’re starting a war with Pakistan.’ Within two days, they called back and said, ‘We understand,’ and the fighting stopped,” Trump said.

He also praised PM Modi as “the nicest-looking guy, but tough as hell,” while reiterating his long-standing claim that his intervention averted a major regional crisis.

Trump Eyes Credit for Peace Efforts

Trump has repeatedly sought recognition for his role in ending the India–Pakistan confrontation, even linking it to his claim for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, this year’s award went instead to Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado.
